- Implementing nutrition education in schools
- Nutrition education in sustainable school food environments
- What should education programmes and school curricula look like and what nutritional expertise do educators and teachers in schools need to be equipped with in order to establish healthy and sustainable school nutrition? How can the effects of these education programmes and curricula be verified? Should a separate subject on “nutrition” be made compulsory in schools?
- Which learning experiences about nutrition can be gained from the educational work for stakeholders from the school environment, e.g. parent committees, student/teacher councils or local authorities in order to build up nutritional expertise for healthy and sustainable school catering?
- Which media and materials to support nutrition education have proven effective in providing activity-based educational work? Which interactive e-learning concepts and IT-based communication formats for improving school children’s diets are recommendable? Which digital formats are particularly suitable for nutrition education?

Fatima Hachem is the Nutrition Education and Consumer Awareness Team leader in the Food and Nutrition Division of FAO. She is a nutritionist/food scientist by education. She has a BSC in Nutrition and Dietetics, an MSC in Human Nutrition from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon, and a Ph.D in Food Science from the University of Reading, UK.
Before assuming her present function, she was the Regional Food and Nutrition Officer in the FAO Regional Office for the Near East and North Africa for 15 years. Here she served 19 member countries on different areas of nutrition, food security and food safety, including developing national capacity, policy advice, drafting analytical reports, formulating projects and providing technical backstopping.
Before joining FAO, she was a senior lecturer in Food Science and Nutrition and the leader of the BSc course in Nutrition and Health, at the University of Teesside UK for four years, and a community nutrition researcher at the University of Lyon, France for three years.
Marjaana Manninen, Counsellor of Education, works like expert and senior advisor at the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI).
EDUFI is a national development agency responsible for the development of pre-primary, basic, general upper secondary, vocational upper secondary and adult education. EDUFI is subordinate to the Ministry of Education and Culture and its tasks and organization are set in the legislation.
Marjaana Manninen has a long background in education having worked as a teacher at comprehensive and upper secondary schools and as the Head of Education of a municipality prior to the position at the Finnish National Agency for Education.
Marjaana Manninen´s main duties consist of the developing processes of curriculum-based subject-teaching, Home Economics, which includes food related education as cooking lessons. She is also responsible for the developing processes of curriculum based sustainable development, consumer education and school meals including food related education of basic education schools in Finland.
Marjaana Manninen has been a speaker at various national conventions and international meetings. She has been a member of different national education networks, connections and programs.
Jason O'Rourke is the Headteacher of Washingborough Academy, a 300 place Nursery and Primary school in Lincolnshire, UK. In the ten years that he has been there, the school has gained national recognition for the curriculum it has developed which has put healthy living and food education at the forefront of children’s learning.
The school has created its own children’s kitchen, commercial kitchen, outdoor kitchen, organic vegetable gardens, heritage orchards, wood-fired pizza oven and beehives. The curriculum allows all children to cook every week and the cookery lessons are published on the academy’s own YouTube Food Channel.
The school are the only in-house school caterer to have been awarded the Soil Association’s Gold Catering Mark, are one of 19 schools in the UK to have the Food for Life Gold School Award, Jason was the winner of the Educatering School Food Plan Awards in 2016 and The Caroline Walker Trust Food Hero of The Year 2019. He was asked to be a Headteacher adviser to the Department of Health and Social Care for the government’s Childhood Obesity Plan. Washingborough Academy are also a case study school for the Government’s Childhood Obesity Plan.
Jason regularly speaks nationally and internationally on how Food Education can benefit children’s health and well-being and has delivered Westminster Briefings as well as talks in Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Italy, Denmark and China. He is a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group on School Food and the British Nutritional Foundation’s Education Working Group. Jason has just completed his Doctorate in Food Education and School Leadership.
Dr. Jesus Fernandez has been the Deputy Director for Program of the SEAMEO Regional Centre for Food and Nutrition (RECFON) in Jakarta, Indonesia since 2019. He is in charge of developing and supervising the implementation of the Centre’s cutting-edge programs and establishing and maintaining functional strategic alliances with relevant institutions in Southeast Asia.
Before joining RECFON, he served as the Deputy Director for Program of the SEAMEO Regional Centre for Tropical Biology (BIOTROP) from 2010 to 2018, and also as a Capacity Building Specialist and Technical Coordinator of the Southeast Asian Network for Agroforestry Education (SEANAFE) from 2006 to 2010.
He worked as a Training Department Manager of the SEAMEO Regional Centre for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) from 2003 to 2006 and was appointed as adjunct assistant professor of the College of Development Communication of the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB) in SY 1999-2000.
His areas of specialization include organizational communication and management, strategic planning, project management, networking and collaboration, capacity building and human resource development, knowledge management, and creating systems-based solutions.
In 2015, Dr. Fernandez was recognized as the Distinguished Alumnus of the College of Development Communication and as one of the Outstanding Alumni of UPLB in the area of Communication for International Development. He earned his BS and MS degrees in Development Communication and PhD degree in Community Development from UPLB.
